Ten Pieces That Prove Brown Is The New Black
Brown, it's quietly agreed, is the new black. That's no slight on black. It just marks the rise of its richer cousin, and for good reason. Where black is crisp, sophisticated and unmistakably smart, brown is softer, warmer and, arguably, flatters just about everyone.
Naturally, we're big fans of brown at Wax, and have been for some time. This season it's brought to life through the Autumn 26 collection, across fabrics, cuts and categories. Here are eleven pieces that do brown justice.
The Whiting is known for its unexpected colour pairings, and this one's no exception. A deep chocolate base is cut through with navy and ecru yarns to form the check, making for an easy, versatile overshirt that sits well with the rest of your autumn wardrobe.
Inspired by vintage army liner jackets, the Marty works as a warm mid-layer under a coat, or as a standalone jacket. It's made from a heavyweight brown bouclé wool, so it has the warmth and structure to earn its place in your wardrobe.
The tee tends to get overlooked once the weather turns. It shouldn't. The Dean is cut from 280gsm organic cotton, which gives it enough weight and texture to work under a chore jacket or knit, and enough structure to stand alone when the sun reappears.
Rugby shirts were made to take a beating, which might explain why they've never really gone away. This season, though, they're everywhere. The Rowhill stays true to form with 450gsm loopback cotton, contrast stripe panels and a twill collar, with a small Wax script logo stitched at the back neck.
The Kurt is one of our longest-standing styles, and it's not hard to see why. It's cut from 100% organic cotton in a relaxed fit, with an elasticated waist that keeps it comfortable all day. If your trouser rotation leans on navy and black, a brown pair is an easy way to shake things up.
Grandads have always known the value of a good cardigan. The Walker would have them green with envy. Brushed wool and mohair give it a soft, lived-in feel, and the brown melange adds texture. It's cut relaxed, so it slips over a tee or shirt, or under an overcoat.
Autumn calls for a good overcoat. Black can feel too formal and navy a little too office, but the Magnus' brown herringbone works with just about everything. Cut in a relaxed fit from a wool blend with a touch of cashmere, it's a coat for this season and plenty more after it.
Most of us have one pair of trousers for dressing up and another for day-to-day. The Malham does both. The pleat and wide, straight leg take care of the tailoring, while a half-elasticated waist keeps things comfortable. As for the Italian flannel and new seasonal stripe, they bring it all together.
The henley has been a menswear staple for well over a century. The Caleb brings it up to date in a dense 380gsm cotton waffle, with more texture and structure than most. The classic details that matter are all still there.
Not quite a cardigan, not quite a jumper, and all the better for it. The Lennox is made from a wool-cotton blend in a flecked brown yarn, finished with natural contrast tipping and a silver zip that opens from either end. Zip it up when it's cold, leave it open when it's not.
