Autumn in London
Autumn is in full swing, and we’re already filling our calendars with plans for the season. Specifically in London town. As a born and bred London brand, it’s only right we explore why it’s been named as this year’s best city in the world for culture. Here’s where to be this autumn, and when.
October marks Black History Month in the UK, focusing on the theme of ‘Honouring our Communities’. Events across London include exhibitions, workshops and markets, as well as wellness and business talks. There’s plenty to choose from throughout the capital, so check out local community events to see how you can get involved.
We can’t discuss autumn without mentioning Oktoberfest. Sure, it’s not a UK-born tradition, but we do know a thing or two about beer. From Finsbury Park to Bermondsey and beyond, embrace all things Bavarian with steins, bratwurst and lederhosen as far as the eye can see. Live oompah bands and a few cheese fondues? You’ll know where to find us.
Film buffs, fanatics and dabblers unite for the 70th edition of the London Film Festival. It’s your chance to see new feature films, shorts and documentaries before their general release at spots like the BFI Southbank and the Prince Charles Cinema. Anticipated films Elsinore and The Debut will bookend the festival, with more must-see events on the programme. Bragging rights and popcorn at the ready.
This one isn’t to be missed. Curated by fashion force Edward Enninful, it’s a true transportation back to the decade of cultural renewal and defining designers. You’ll see photography, fashion, art and design come together in a blend of nostalgia, featuring names such as Juergen Teller, Sarah Lucas and Yinka Shonibare, all exhibited at Tate Britain.
If you’re still looking for that art fix, make The Regent’s Park your next stop. Frieze London Art Fair picks out contemporary pieces and living artists. You’ll be brushing shoulders with curators, collectors and critics, getting a peek at the most exciting artists working today. With almost 300 galleries from 48 countries and regions, get your most comfortable shoes on - which we can certainly help with - and see what the fuss is all about.
Whether you’re a quick-chapter-on-the-tube kind of person or you’re running out of bookshelf space, the London Literature Festival will have every reader flocking to its events. Hosted at the Southbank Centre and curated by renowned page-turner Dua Lipa, you’ll spot established and emerging writers throughout the festival. Highlights include Dua in conversation with Zadie Smith, Patti Smith, and other authors not called Smith.
Jazz can divide opinion, but the London Jazz Festival certainly doesn’t. Taking over the capital for ten days, the biggest pan-city music festival in Europe will host live performances and special collabs, from hazy basement jazz bars to the finest concert halls. Celebrating the likes of Coltrane, Davis, Fitzgerald and Ellington, it’s the place to be for jazz aficionados and first-time listeners.
So if you find yourself twiddling your thumbs this autumn, you know where to take yourself. And what to wear. London’s the city that keeps on giving, and you never know what you’ll discover down that street, across the river, up that viewpoint. That’s London for you.
